In architectural/scene drawing/map making not all visual information is of equal importance and you as the artist should have an objective about what the viewer should be focusing on. This will also naturally lead you into the second area of improvement for architectural/scene drawings: composition. Another commentor suggested value studies and thats not a bad way of going about it but understanding what you're trying to communicate via values is important. This will improve your understanding of 3d space significantly. I would focus on doing simple studies that breakdown a scenery into foreground, midground and background until you can look at any image and mentally be able to clock each level of depth without having to think about it. Not having a ready to visit city scape to draw from isnt the problem here- you can practice depth with landscape drawings and simple room drawings. Based on the sketches you gave and the way youre talking about anatomy and being able to visualize it in 3d space in your mind, youre missing that same skill set as applied to the built environment.Īt the current moment, your sketches arent readable as architecture because they are lacking depth- everything reads as the same distance even with perspective imposed on the image. I wanted to spend more time on this before I got started on doing my big projectsįormer arch student here. I just wanted to ask here because I wanted advice about this before I buy a bunch of books. If there was a VR app that allowed you to explore architecture in detail I’d buy it in a heartbeat. Google Streetview worked for one drawing I did a few years ago, but it doesn’t feel good to use, or maybe I’m just doing it wrong. But what about architecture? If you live in a boring area with no money to travel, you only have a few photos that give no feeling of depth. Like drawing people is easy, there’s people all around you and so many photos online. here’s some examples of my sketches before my year long break The main reason I’m struggling is because it’s like learning how to draw again from scratch, like it’s legitimately hard to do the art or animation pieces I want to do because my skills just aren’t there yet with the backgrounds. When I go into my mind for art or animation ideas it’s like my mind imagines stuff like this but my skills are like this. Even with a reference it feels like I’m drawing the equivalent of a beginning artist learning anatomy from anime. The main issue is that while I learned anatomy to a point that I can look at a reference and be able to rotate it in my head (well just enough for my piece), I only learned how to draw buildings to a point that it’s nothing but rectangular cubes with Windows slapped on top. Drawing full scenes in general is my weakness, the area I live around is so flat, boring, and country that just going out with a sketchbook doesn’t teach me anything outside of swamps and woods.
